Formed from the merger of four units into a single research centre, the Saint-Louis Research Institute (IRSL – UMR 1342) was established in 2025 under the joint supervision of Université Paris Cité (UPC) and Inserm. Some research teams are also accredited by the CNRS (EMR8000), the CEA or the Collège de France.
The IRSL’s main areas of research are oncohaematology (leukaemias, predisposition to haematological disorders, clinical trials, targeted therapies), immunology and inflammation, dermatology and infectious diseases.
A leading player in cancer research in the Île-de-France region, the IRSL has a national and international reputation in its areas of excellence through its twenty or so research teams – several of which hold ATIP-Avenir or ERC accreditation – its translational scientific output, the coordination of numerous collaborative oncology groups, and its cross-disciplinary programmes: the University Hospital Institute (IHU) ‘Leukaemia Institute’, the SIRIC InSitu, the RHU FAME and SPRINT, the FHU TRANSVIR and PROTHEE, amongst others. The ‘Haematology – Oncogenesis – Biotherapies’ (HOB) doctoral school at Université Paris Cité, a European school, patient associations, a science promotion association and the Carnot Opale commercialisation institute are also based there.
The strength of the IRSL lies in its affiliation with the ‘Campus Saint-Louis’, which brings together a research institute, a hospital, numerous academic departments, patient organisations and industry partners in a collaborative effort focused on research, education, technology and innovative care, all in the service of personalised medicine.
